Why do customers have to “tap on and tap off” the system?

Fares on SunRail are based on the distance traveled. When using a paper ticket or SunCard, SunRail uses a “tap on, tap off” system to calculate the exact fare for your trip. Mobile app customers do not need to tap on and tap off.
